Questions people ask

What is Penalty Duel?

Penalty Duel is a free, turn-based 1v1 penalty shoot-out in the browser, made by outlol, on a computer or a phone, with no install and no account. Each side takes 5 penalties and keeps goal against 5. If it is level after that, sudden death follows a penalty each at a time, and a duel ends early once the lead can no longer be caught.

How is a penalty decided?

Every penalty is a shot against a dive, chosen blind of each other. The taker picks a spot in the goal and a power: a harder shot beats more of the keeper's reach, but drifts wider and higher than aimed, so too hard at a corner goes wide or over. The keeper picks left, middle or right, and high or low. outlol's server decides every penalty from the two choices, and new rounds are played out in outlol's 3D stadium.

Do both players need to be online at the same time?

No. You take your turn when it suits you, your shots and your dives all at once, and send the duel's link. Your opponent takes theirs when it suits them, whenever they open it. Neither side sees the other's choices until the round they belong to is decided.

Do I need an account?

No. Penalty Duel is free and needs no account and no install. Open You in outlol's world, choose Challenge somebody to penalties, take your turn and send the link it gives you, an address of the form outlol.bid/duel/ followed by the duel's code.

Who makes Penalty Duel?

An AI agent builds Penalty Duel in the open, releasing a new version every hour, on the hour, since 00:00 Turkey time on 7 October 2026. This page logs what changed in each one.

What changed, and when

· Foundry Penalties, a stadium of its own

  • Penalty Duel has a home in the world: Foundry Penalties, on the equator beside the other house stadiums. Its card starts a duel, and the Fields list files it under Duel.
  • It is a stadium built for penalties: one goal at the end of a short pitch, and behind it a steep red-and-white stand under a raised roof, so from the map you look in over the low end at the goal, the board behind it and the crowd.
  • Like every house stadium, all of its surfaces can be bought: the wrap round the outside, the roof, the boards round the pitch, a banner up each stand and the centre.
  • You see the same building on the map, on the globe and in the opening film.

· Penalty Duel has its own pages

  • Penalty Duel now has a page of its own in English, Turkish and Spanish: what it is, how a penalty is decided, and that nobody has to be online at the same time, with this log of what changed and when.
  • The pages' Start a duel button opens a new duel in outlol straight away.
  • Wherever outlol says what it is, penalty duels are now named beside football, foosball, Wildball and Trickshot, from the front page and the how-to-play pages to the press kit.

· Know when it is your turn

  • The You tab now counts the duels waiting on your turn, beside your friends' messages, so you can see from anywhere in outlol that somebody has answered your challenge.
  • The count is checked again every minute while outlol is in front, and straight after you take a turn.

· Every penalty, played out in the stadium

  • New rounds are now played out in outlol's own 3D stadium before they are listed: the taker runs up, the ball flies to where it was struck, and the keeper dives where they chose, with the hoardings behind the goal in the shot.
  • Each new round plays once, the first time you open the duel after it is decided; Replay plays them again and Skip goes straight to the results. With reduced motion turned on, the results show straight away.
  • Your penalties are taken at one end and theirs at the other, each in their own colour.

· Your duels, and who they are against

  • You now lists your duels under Penalty Duel, the ones waiting on you first, each with who it is against and the score from your side: your turn, their turn, won or lost.
  • Each side plays under the name it goes by everywhere else in outlol, and a duel shows who it is against at the top.
  • A duel's link pasted into a chat now says who is challenging: 'Mira challenges you to a penalty duel'.
  • The goal you aim at keeps a strip of grass under its line, so a low shot is easier to place.

· Your first duel

  • You can play a duel now. Open You and choose Challenge somebody to penalties: for each of your five penalties, press where in the goal to shoot and set how hard, and choose which way to dive against theirs.
  • Send the link it gives you to whoever you want to beat. When they open it they take their five, and every round is shown to you both: where each shot went and which way the keeper dived.
  • A link that leads nowhere says so and offers a duel of your own instead.

· Duels are kept, a turn at a time

  • outlol can now keep a duel. Whoever starts one takes the first turn: five shots, and five dives against the other side's five, all at once.
  • The first person to open the duel's link after that takes the other side, and their turn decides all five rounds. If it is level after five, sudden death follows one penalty each at a time.
  • Nobody sees the other side's choices until the round they belong to is decided, so a keeper cannot wait to see where the shot went. outlol's server decides every penalty; the browser only shows it.
  • Next: the screen where you take your shots and choose your dives.

· Day one: the rules of a penalty duel

  • outlol starts a fifth game: Penalty Duel. Two players take penalties at each other, five each and then sudden death, without ever having to be online at the same time. You take your turn when it suits you, and your opponent takes theirs when it suits them.
  • Every penalty is a shot and a dive chosen blind of each other, as at a real penalty: the taker picks a spot in the goal and how hard to strike it, and the keeper picks a side and whether to go high or stay low.
  • A harder shot reaches the corner before the keeper does, but it drifts wider and higher than you aimed; strike it too hard at the corner and it goes wide or over. A keeper who stands still covers the middle at any height.
  • This first release is the rules themselves, the same on every device and on outlol's server, which decides each penalty. The game you play arrives over the coming hours.
